Try to find answers to your questions before you use the “Ask a Librarian” service.
In order to become a registered reader of our library, please visit the main information and registration desk (on the 2nd floor) and follow these steps:
1. Present a valid ID and, if you are a school or college student, also present a valid student ID card;
2. Fill out a reader registration form;
3. Read the Library Use Policy.
You can also obtain a library card and modify or update your registration details via the e-service portal www.ibiblioteka.lt.
- Can I enter or make use of the library without a library card? When am I required to have a library card?
A library card enables you to use in-library computers, order publications from the depository, use remote services (access subscription databases and services offered at www.ibiblioteka.lt), and to book meeting rooms for up to 2 hours free of charge.
- Can I use my laptop computer in the library? Is there Wi-Fi available at the library? How do I use the library’s computer workstations?
Yes, there is Wi-Fi available at the library and you can use your laptop in the library. Only registered users may access the internet from the National Library’s computers. If you want to register to use public access computers, please approach the main information and registration desk (on the 2nd floor) or ask reading room staff and they will create an account for you.
Once you find a desired item on the National Library’s Online Catalogue, click “Order a Publication”. In the “Library card number” field, enter your card number and enter your password (the password is your surname, using letters of the Lithuanian alphabet, if you have not changed it). Click “Login”. Select a desired date in the “Order date” field. The “Copy details” section shows the library collections containing your desired item. Select the collection from which you would like to receive the publication, and click “Order”. If your order has been accepted, you will see a list of “Ordered documents” where you can check whether your desired document has been ordered successfully. To check your order details, click “My Area” › “My Orders” on the top menu bar of the Online Catalogue.
Currently, online orders can only be made for publications held in the General Collection, the Music and Visual Arts Reading Room, and the Rare Books and Manuscripts Reading Room. You do not need to place orders for documents held in other reading rooms. They are available in the open collections of the reading rooms.
Older foreign-language books (acquired by the library prior to 1994) that have not yet been included in the Online Catalogue, can be found by using the National Library’s Image Catalogue. These may not be ordered online. To order them, you have to physically visit the library and fill out an order form.
You can extend your loan period via the internet. You can do this if your loan period has not expired and if the item is not overdue or not booked by another reader. Log in to the library’s Online Catalogue and click “My Area” on the menu. Enter your log-in details (your reader’s card number and password) in the opening dialog window. Once you are logged in, your items’ order details will be displayed and you will be able to see the list of your current checked-out items that can be extended. Click the “extend” button next to the chosen book in this dialog box.
You can extend a loan period or check item details by visiting the library interactive service portal www.ibiblioteka.lt. Click “Log in” and enter your reader’s card number and password. Your profile details will be displayed on the top field of the portal. Click “Orders” and then go to “Documents”. You will be able to see the libraries from which you have borrowed books, your order statuses, due dates as well as extension options.
- How do I find bibliographic information on articles published in Lithuanian periodicals, scientific studies and collections?
The National Bibliographic Data Bank (NBDB) was launched in 1998 for the purpose of keeping a bibliographic record of published documents from Lithuania and related to Lithuania.
- How long will I have to wait for a reply to a question I have submitted through the “Ask a Librarian” service?
We will answer your question within two business day of receiving it, except for weekends and unscheduled occasions when the National Library is closed.
